Annoying Friends on Facebook

Continuing on our topic of Facebook, I thought this article was interesting. It is about the annoying behaviors of Facebook friends. I personally have several people hidden from my News Feed because of their annoying status updates. Anyone have any similar experiences?

Facebook Friends

Here is a short essay and infographic about a survey of how women thought about their facebook friends.

Teenage Nightmare

Jay Gabler writes about Why it Sucked to Be a Teenager Before the Internet.

Death and Facebook

This is a little gruesome but in light of our planned discussion on Thursday it is an interesting read.  A young woman died and the paramedic took pictures of her and for whatever reason decided to post them to facebook.  The parents are now suing facebok in order to find out who downloaded the picture so they can erase all traces of the photos on the Internet.  You can read the article here.

Twitter as Media

Here is an interesting post about how a majority of the twitter content is created by a "relatively small group of celebrities, organizations and media outlets."

50 Tyson

Shanisa mentioned 50 Tyson to me after class.  I haven't heard about him but found this really interesting essay about viral exploitation, which connects to our discussion about Rebecca Black today in class.  You can read it here.

Steve Albini is probably most famous as the producer of Nirvana.  He is also a renown audiophile and a huge proponent of analog over digital recording.  Here is an interesting video that discusses the difference between analog and digital recording with some thoughts from Albini.  Wired Science: Audio Files

Has our music really just become bland and repetitive?

A friend showed this to me, it really shows that all of our "hi" songs really are just the same type of thing and follow a set formula. How accurate do you think this is?

I just saw this short article, The iPad and Autism, which discusses the benefits of the iPad for autistic children.  Very interesting.

Music vs. Media

For anyone looking for new music, or looking for an artist who knows exactly how to use the media industry:

Check out: Marina & the Diamonds

There are multiple songs mentioning the media industry and how it works, not to mention how we in society are supposed to feel and be affected by it all.

The Onion Tee

I found this t-shirt online and I thought that it fit really nicely with what our class was talking about last week. Using social networking sites, we are able to manipulate how we appear to the public- whether it be by only adding specific photos of ourselves or deleting comments we don't like from others on the social media sites that we belong to. From "The Virtual Self" article, we learned that social media sites allow us to put idealized representations of ourselves on the Internet. And that's exactly what this shirt is depicting.

Renting movies on...Facebook?

I read this article from the New York Times that explains now Warner Brothers is "testing" movie rentals to users of Facebook. Using virtual credits, FB users can rent a movie (right now the only one available is "The Dark Knight") and stream it onto their computers. Credits can be bought at major retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy and have been in use since FarmVille hit the social network site.

So will this put an end to Netflix? I sure hope not because no matter how convenient it may be to download a rented movie on my Facebook account, I really enjoy the feedback and suggested movie rentals that I get from Netflix. But who knows...

Digital Youth Report

Here is a link to a new report created after several years of research on the topic of kids learning and living with digital media.  This is a list of some of their findings (and the implications of those findings).
  • Youth use online media to extend friendships and interests
  • Youth engage in peer-based, self-directed learning online
  • Adults should facilitate young people's engagement with digital media
  • Given the diversity of digital media, it is problematic to develop a standardized set of benchmarks against which to measure young people's technical and media literacy
  • In interest-driven participation, adults have an important role to play
  • To stay relevant in the 21st century, education institutions need to keep pace with the rapid changes introduced by digital media.

Facebook Fail

Here is another example of someone doing something really stupid on Facebook and paying the price for it.

Best Buy (again)

I know Mitch posted the Superbowl commercial of Best Buy's Buy Back Program, but I just saw a different one that had me cracking up. It points to every type of technology.... enjoy.

Remix Libya

We will start talking about remix culture very soon in the semester but this is a really interesting example connected to Libya.  Isabel Kershner's NYT essay, "Qaddafi YouTube Spoof by Israeli Gets Arab Fans" discusses the rising popularity of the included youtube clip.
